RIVERSIDE --- Day three of the CBU Classic was all about the pitchers, as the Lancers kept their two opponents off the board on Saturday. With the bats aiding in the efforts of the two starting arms, CBU put up 13 runs on the day in a sweep of CSU Bakersfield and Saint Francis.
The Lancers have won four in a row and are now 7-3 through ten games.
Emily Darwin was handed the ball in the first game of the night, a second meeting with CSU Bakersfield. Darwin only needed five innings to record the shutout as her offense pushed across nine runs on ten hits.
Darwin held the Roadrunners to two hits while striking out four.
CBU got on the board in the second with a two-run double by Sydney Peterson, who later scored on a wild pitch. Kenzie Farrier-Pilon continued the second inning rally with an RBI single, plating Matti Severns. The offense kept rolling in the third when Brooklyn Bassett tripled, plating Makayla Medellin. Bassett then scored on a groundout by Ella Bakholdin.
The Lancers then put an end to the game with three runs in the fifth. Madalyn Martin drove in Medellin to make it 7-0, and then Bassett launched a towering blast to left to end the game. The two-run shot was the first of Bassett's collegiate career.
A 90-minute break followed before CBU hosted Saint Francis under the lights of John C. Funk Stadium.
It was Miranda De Nava getting the call to the circle in Saturday's finale, and what followed was one of the best outings in program history. De Nava struck out 12, a CBU DI record, while allowing two hits to the Red Flash.
Ashlee Annett put the Lancers on the board with an RBI single in the first, and then CBU added to it with an SFU run in the second, making it 2-0. Medellin drove in the third run off a sacrifice fly, and then Stevie Robison joined the party with a double in the fourth, plating Bethany Millen. Robison missed a home run by inches, as the ball landed on top of the left field fence.
The CBU Classic continues on Sunday with three more games at Funk Stadium. The Lancers are scheduled to next take the field on Monday against Hawaii, but rain is currently in the forecast.
