CEDAR CITY, UT--- Western Athletic Conference play is officially underway, and California Baptist softball kicked things off on the road at Southern Utah, splitting the opening conference weekend with the Thunderbirds. The Lancers secured the first game of the day 2-0, thanks to solid pitching, before dropping the second duel 6-1. CBU moves to 23-11 on the season and is now 1-1 in WAC play.
Miranda De Nava pitched a gem to open the conference season, limiting the Thunderbirds to just two hits and no runs. She picked up her ninth win of the season behind eight strikeouts and no free bases, cementing CBU's first conference win of the season. Jordyn Madrigal and Matt Severns both picked up RBI on base hits for the Lancers' pair of runs to ensure the 2-0 victory.
The second game of the day was SUU, despite CBU picking up an early lead off a solo shot from Makayla Medellin. The home squad was quick to stop the bleeding and held down the Lancer offensive, while simultaneously tacking on six runs before CBU could get around the bases again. Two more runs would cross home plate for the Lancers in the top of the fifth behind another pair of RBI base hits, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit.
Kenzie Farrier-Pilon and Medellin led the day in hits, as both secured a pair each, while the Lancer pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the day. The weekend is now set for a rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 11 a.m. in Cedar City, and with it will come either squad's first WAC series win of the year.
