BOISE, ID --- With two out, three on, and the Lancers down by two in the bottom of the seventh, Makayla Medellin put on the hero's cape to save the day in Boise. It was the perfect ending to the day for the Lancers, who exit day two in Idaho with another split.
California Baptist is now 19-7 after splitting the day with St. Thomas (MN) and Weber State. CBU is 2-2 through two days of the Blue Collar Classic.
The Lancers were down to their final out in their second game of the day, the first of two meetings with Weber State this weekend. Staring down an 0-2 Friday, with the tying run on second base, Medellin stepped up to the plate looking to save the day. Coming off a three-home run performance on Thursday, Medellin had some heat left in her bat as she launched a walk-off grand slam over the right field fence to cap off a 6-4 comeback win.
Medellin leads the Lancers with seven home runs this season and is also tops in the locker room with 30 RBI.
It wasn't just Medellin adding power to the CBU offense. The Lancers saw their first two runs score in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Berkleigh Tuck hit her first collegiate home run.
Emily Darwin earned the victory after a scoreless inning in relief. Darwin is now 6-2. Madalyn Martin started the contest and logged 4.1 IP before turning the ball to Miranda De Nava for the next five outs.
De Nava also pitched in CBU's opening game, an 11-3 loss to St. Thomas in six innings. De Nava took the loss, moving her to 6-4, after allowing four runs across two innings.
Darwin was first out of the bullpen and logged three innings in which she surrendered three runs. Annika Hollingsworth tossed the final inning in relief for the Lancers.
CBU plated two runs in the first inning. The first scored on an error, allowing Matti Severns to cross home. A fielder's choice later in the inning pushed across Medellin. The third run scored off a double play in the fourth.
The Lancers will conclude the Blue Collar Classic on Saturday with a second look at Weber State. Saturday's game is scheduled for 9 a.m. (PT).
CBU will continue the season next week with two games in San Diego against UC San Diego and San Diego State. The Lancers return to Riverside on Friday, March 13, for the first two games of a three game series against North Dakota State.
